Today we began our science unit on Plants, Animals, and People. We had a very exciting start by planting Spider Plants in soil! Luckily, we had Elizabeth's Aunt Nancy come in to our classroom to help out (she has a green thumb!) and every student had the opportunity to put a "baby" spider plant into soil, water their plant, and then decorate their cup with paint. We also learned about the parts of a plant and the students made their own drawings, using what we talked about as a class, and what they had experienced during the planting of the spider plants. We will continue to study our plants as the weeks go on, and will soon begin to make observations and recordings in our "Plant Logs", which will be introduced on Thursday of this week.

Here is the larger spider plant, brought in by Mrs. Ewing, which is where we got our "baby plantlets" for our own potting!
First, we put soil about 3/4ths of the way into our cups.
Then, we put the baby plantlets into the soil, added more soil on top of the bulbs, and then watered the plants with plenty of water.
Next, we chose different colors of paint to decorate our cups.
After that the painting began!

After painting we discussed the parts of a plant as a class and then we worked on drawing pictures of our plants and labeling the parts.
Overall, we had a very successful and very fun day of science!
