Columbus Day

In honor of Columbus Day, on Thursday we learned about Christopher Columbus and his voyage to America in 1492. The students enjoyed hearing books about Christopher Columbus and having discussions about what it would be like to be on Columbus' 3 ships (The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria). We also talked about what it would be like as a Native American, having new and different people invade your land. We read several different books to get different perspectives of the famous voyage.

Here are the books we read in class:

This book tells the story of Christopher Columbus beginning with the famous rhyme "In fourteen hundred ninety-two/ Columbus sailed the ocean blue", and the book continues in a easily enjoyable rhyme. The content was clear and concise and painted an accurate picture of what the voyage was like for Columbus and his men.

This book was a basic account of Christopher Columbus' earlier life and then his exploration to "The New World". It includes all the important information of the journey and also a map of the the first voyage.

Encounter by Jane Yolen, is told from the perspective of a young native boy from the indigenous people of San Salvador (The Taino). A powerful, thought-provoking picture book, perfect for showing students that every story has two sides.
