We've had another busy (and very successful!) week in first grade. We started math and writer's workshop, and even met with our third grade reading buddies from Ms. Little's class. We learned how to pick "just right books" for our book boxes this week. I brought in a bag of shoes (tennis shoes, fancy shoes, winter books, and flip flops) and we talked about how we wear shoes for different activities and seasons, just like we read books for different reasons (fiction for fun, non-fiction to learn facts and information). Then, I had some of the kids switch shoes, to show that we have different sized feet and shoe styles, just like we all read different levels of books!The class is doing a great job with the Daily 5. We have built our reading stamina up to 13 minutes for "read to self" and 10 minutes for "read to someone". Our goal is 20-25 minutes of independent reading/day. While the students read, they are practicing reading strategies they are learning, too.Here 's a look into our classroom.
