Last week our class started an author study on Mo Willems. We have done a lot of activities surrounding his Elephant and Piggie series and also his Pigeon Books. I brought these books into school last Monday and I don't think they have stayed on the shelves more than an hour this whole week. The students love the funny stories and are picking up the books to read every chance they can get!
We have started "Reader's Theatre" with these books and everyone is enjoying acting out the parts of Elephant and Piggie, and the Pigeon and the Duckling. The level of reading is fairly simple, but the repeated reading helps students gain fluency and expression, which are important aspects of helping students comprehend text. These books are helping everyone become better readers, the kids are having a blast, and we are all laughing at the humor in the stories!
We have also done a writing activity with the book Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Students wrote letters to the Bus Driver telling him why they thought it would be a good idea or a bad idea to have the Pigeon drive the bus. This was a good way to introduce persuasive writing and the students were able to do a nice job giving reasons why or why not.
We have displayed our letters on the bulletin board outside out classroom for other classes to see!
Lastly, some exciting news I shared with the class on Friday:
We have won the latest Elephant and Piggie book through the book blog Book Blog Fun. I entered out class into a contest last week and we were the lucky winners! We can't wait to receive our new book!
